Kyel Reid’s injury time goal gave Charlton a 2-1 victory at 10-man Southend and took them up to third in League 1 on Friday night.
The Shrimpers were already a man short, after Jean-Francois Christophe was sent off for violent conduct in the 25th minute, when they took the lead.
Matt Paterson hit a long range effort that went under Addicks keeper Rob Elliot just after the half-hour mark.
Charlton saw two efforts cleared off the line by Simon Francis and Adam Barrett, before Akpo Sodje stabbed in their equaliser from substitute Reid’s cross after 73 minutes.
The home side almost went in front when Francis’ free-kick hit the bar and the follow-up was cleared off the line by Nicky Bailey.
But Reid then snatched all three points at the death for Phil Parkinson’s side when he latched on to a long ball over the top and scored with a low shot.
