Intrepid scouts and their leaders are taking on three of Great Britain’s tallest mountains to raise enough money to buy a new minibus.
Members of Stone Scout Group, which is based in Elm Road, are embarking on the Three Peaks Challenge on Saturday, May 18 which will see them tackle the tallest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales in just 24 hours.
They will start by climbing Ben Nevis before heading to Scafell Pike and finally Mount Snowdon.
The group will walk just over 26 miles in that time and climb about 9,800 feet.
Scout leader Neil Brunsdon said the group had been busy training.
Mr Brunsdon, 39, said: “We did the Yorkshire Three Peaks last month which took three mountains, 25.5 miles, and we did it in 12 and a half hours.
“We have also been individually training on bikes and going running. We are as ready as we’ll ever be.”
The team taking part includes Mr Brunsdon, Paul Pritchard, Dan Baker, Kelvin Hoadley, Ben Pritchard, Adrian Reeve, Daryl Hoadley, Sam Pritchard, Alan Ball, Nigel Pike, Del Parker and Paul Tolhurst.
Mr Brunsdon added: “We are all being individually sponsored and want to raise as much as we can. We are hoping to raise at least a couple of hundred each.
“We need a new mini bus which we can take into London - our old ones don’t allow us to go there because of the low emissions zone, and not being able to drive there restricts what the Scouts can do.
“It will cost about £10,000 to buy a new one and we have been busy doing lots of other fundraising things, like quizzes, a disco and running burger stalls at events.”
