Lowfield Street, Dartford: Final building to be torn down as part of town revamp

A striking image shows the final building left to be torn down as work continues on a town centre’s transformation.

More than 100 flats are set to be built in Lowfield Street, Dartford, which are hoped to help create “vibrancy and an attractive environment” in the south of the town centre.

Bellway Homes is transforming the development site, which is a large area between Lowfield Street and Central Park, as part of its Copperhouse Green project.

The developer aims to build 664 homes in total and construction first started in 2019.

Phases one, two and three at the old brewery have already been completed with residents moving into the first properties in 2021.

Construction will soon begin on 155 flats in the road, and the majority of the former buildings have now been torn down.

The site lies from Market Street in the north to Fairfield Leisure Centre in the south.

The land had been previously owned by Tesco which had attempted to build a supermarket on the site as early as 2003, but sold the land to Bellway in 2015 after several failed applications.

In April 2022, plans for 155 flats were approved.

The first site on 46-58 Lowfield Street will see 71 flats – in five storeys – built next to the existing phases, and would affect the setting of two Grade II Listed Buildings, one at 41A Lowfield Street and the other at the Two Brewers pub.

However, a heritage report conducted on behalf of Bellway said the flats would “have no impact on their significance”.

A second site at the former Dartford Tyre Zone shop will also become a five-storey block with 84 flats.
