Dartford teenager to receive educational support after racial abuse of footballer

A Dartford teenager is to receive 'educational support' after he admitted racially abusing a footballer on social media.

Swansea City player Yan Dhanda, 22, received abusive messages following his club's loss to Manchester City on February 10 – and the message was traced to an address in Dartford.

Kent Police said they received a referral from South Wales Police relating to the offensive messages, and following further enquiries a 14-year-old boy attended a police station for a "non-custodial interview" on Thursday, September 9.

The boy, who is now 15, admitted an offence under the Malicious Communications Act and the case was discussed at a Youth Justice Multi-Agency Panel meeting on Tuesday, October 26.

A statement from Kent Police said: "As the boy had made a full and frank admission and this was his first offence, it was agreed that a community resolution was the most appropriate and proportionate outcome.

"He therefore agreed to accept educational support to prevent him committing any similar offences in the future."

Both Swansea City and Manchester City condemned the social media post in the wake of the incident.

Facebook also reported that the account involved had been temporarily suspended from sending Instagram messages, although Swansea reportedly said Facebook's action was too lenient.
