Traffic was nose to tail after a multi-vehicle crash involving two lorries and a van on the M25.
The clockwise stretch between J1a for Swanscombe and J30 for Lakeside in Essex was affected, with tailbacks described as "stop-start".
Three lanes were shut, and drivers were advised to avoid the area.
A police spokesman said officers were called to the area just before 4.50pm today.
The statement added: "Officers are currently at the scene with South East Coast Ambulance Service.
"Injuries described as minor have been reported and three lanes are currently closed.
"Motorists are advised to expect delays whilst recovery is arranged."
The road reopened at around 9.30pm.
It had to be closed again while emergency repairs were carried out in the early hours.
A police spokesman added: "Two people were taken to a local hospital for treatment to injuries which were not reported to be serious."
