Large van fire causes delays on A2 near Dartford and Bean Lane

There were delays on the A2 after a large van burst into flames on the side of the road.

Two fire engines were called to the blaze on the coastbound carriageway between Bean and the Darenth Interchange, near Dartford.

Motorists had reported seeing thick black plumes of smoke "billowing" across the road around 10am.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the flames using hose reel jets and compressed air foam.

No injuries were reported and it’s believed the fire started accidentally.

Traffic was temporarily held while firefighters attended the incident but all lanes have since reopened.

A motorist travelling along the road this morning told KentOnline: "It is literally in flames and the smoke is really thick coming over the A2.

"It does not look good at all. I have never seen a vehicle fire quite like that."

It comes just weeks after dramatic footage was posted of a similar incident, also involving a van, on the same section of road.

Yesterday, a three-mile stretch of the A2 was shut between Canterbury and Faversham due to a lorry fire.
