Charlton bagged their first pre-season victory thanks to Akpo Sodje's first-half winner at Welling on Tuesday night.
The Charlton supporters in a crowd of 2,080 got their first glimpse of summer signings Johnnie Jackson and Gary Doherty in the first half, while there was a familiar face after the break as Jon Fortune played 45 minutes for the Addicks.
Sodje had the most chances in the game, going close on three occasions before finally heading in Chris Solly's delightful cross seven minutes before half-time.
Welling could have been ahead by then, however, as Solly, pictured, was on hand to clear the ball off the line at the other end as Darren Marsden's neat footwork and clever pass to fellow trialist Junior Dadson unlocked the Charlton defence.
Only a fine save by keeper Charlie Mitten prevented Charlton doubling their lead before the break when he kept out Etienne Esajas' low drive.
Both sides made changes at half-time and then in the second half with the game becoming disjointed. The Addicks fielded Carl Jenkinson, Tamer Tuna and Yado Mambo - who all spent time on loan at Park View Road last season.
The best chance of the half came in stoppage time when Tuna raced clear through but he was denied by keeper Lucas Ming.
