Ugly scenes erupted when a controversial late penalty condemned 10-man Dartford to defeat at Woking on Tuesday night.

Giuseppe Sole’s spot-kick, eight minutes from time, settled a tight contest between the two promoted sides but there were unsavoury incidents before and after the goal.

Dartford’s players protested vehemently against the decision to award the penalty. Loick Pires, formerly of Welling, tumbled under Mark Arber’s challenge as he was racing into the area and after taking advice from the linesman, the referee pointed to the spot, despite the initial tangle appearing to occur outside the box.

As Sole waited to step up, players wrestled outside the box and Louis Wells (pictured) was booked for taking the ball off the spot. When Sole slotted the ball home, he celebrated in the goalkeeper’s face and players from both sides became involved in a melee behind the goal.

Things escalated when a fan jumped out of the stand and pushed Dartford’s Tom Bonner, provoking an angry response from his team-mates. Stewards eventually led the offender away.

Lee Noble had earlier been sent off for two bookings in quick succession, while Wells pulled off a string of saves to keep the visitors in the game as Woking pushed forward.

The closest Dartford came to scoring was a header from Elliot Bradbrook which dropped over the crossbar.

Tony Burman’s side, who have yet to pick up a point in Blue Square Bet Premier, travel to Macclesfield Town on Saturday.
