A young woman was treated for minor burns after a fire broke out in a kitchen in Greenhithe last night.

Firefighters were called to the first floor flat in Griffin Walk at about 9pm after a couple raised the alarm.

The fire was sparked by a pan containing oil being left on a stove unattended.

Two crews from Dartford wearing breathing apparatus, used a hose reel to put out flames and a ventilation fan to clear smoke.

One of the team bandaged the hand of the woman, who was in her 20s, before paramedics arrived and took her to Darent Valley Hospital.

Watch manager David Boakes, said “The pan burst into flames very quickly and spread up the walls of the kitchen which was badly damaged. Fortunately their smoke alarm went off which also alerted people living in neighbouring flats.”

Crews spent an hour dealing with the incident and then ensured that alarms were working in the other three flats in the block.

Mr Boakes added: “ We would urge people to make sure any fire safety devices are in good working order. “
