Video: Watch CCTV footage
of the incident
A teenager has been arrested in connection with an incident on a
train through Kent where a woman's hair was set alight.
The 16-year-old from Swanley was arrested by British Transport
police earlier today.
It follows the attack on Sunday on a Hastings to London train
service and three other youths are still being hunted.
The victim was a Swedish teacher visiting England with a group
of her students, who were making their way back to London after a
day out.
She was walking through the carriage around 6.30pm when a youth
held out a lighter as she passed by him.
Her hair immediately caught alight and she only realised what
had happened when she walked towards her students and saw them
screaming and pointing to her hair. She was then able to pat the
fire out.
The attack left part of the victim’s hair singed and, while she
didn’t suffer burns, the incident left her extremely
distressed.
Insp Ancell added: “I would like to pass my thanks to the
members of the public who came forward and provided us with
information.”
Anyone with information about the incident - which happened at
around 6.30pm on Sunday, July 19 - is urged to contact British
Transport Police on 0800 405040 or
Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
