Charlton will be able to call on young striker Martyn Waghorn over Christmas after his loan from Sunderland was extended following Monday’s exceptional performance in the 2-2 draw against Derby County.
Allowing Waghorn to join Charlton was one of the last transfers sanctioned by former Sunderland manager Roy Keane before leaving the Stadium of Light.
Charlton supporters were left grateful for that last minute piece of business as they afforded the 18-year-old a standing ovation after scoring on his full home debut.
Caretaker manager Phil Parkinson was full of praise for Waghorn, not only for his performance but his attitude. He explained: “Martyn came to see me a week ago and I told him he had been unlucky because we have eight loan players and I can only name five in the squad at any one time.
“He told me he totally understood and would keep working hard and would wait for his chance. He told me that he understood why I was going for experienced players.
“It was such a mature response from an 18-year-old who totally understood the situation and wasn’t just thinking about himself but the team. I told him that kind of attitude alone would earn him a good career in the game.
“But he also has exceptional ability so he will become a top player.”
