A second half brace from Yoni Buyens completed a superb fight back from Charlton who came from a goal down against Reading to win at the Valley on Saturday afternoon.
The on-loan Buyens scored his seventh penalty of the season to cancel out Pavel Pogrebnayk’s opener, writes Josh Fordham.
The midfielder had not scored from open play before today’s game, that was until he converted a cross 20 minutes from time to give the Addicks the lead.
The three points were wrapped up ten minutes later by Welsh striker Simon Church for his third goal of the season. Pogrebnyak scored his second in injury time but it was too little too late for the away side.
The Addicks have now made it seven wins from nine games and scored another three goals in addition to the three they netted against Blackpool in their midweek fixture.
Pogrebnyak put Reading a goal up in the 40th minute after pouncing on Jonathan Obita’s defected shot.
The home side could not clear their lines and Obita picked the ball up on the edge of the area and had his shot blocked. Pogrebnyak was the quickest to react to the loose ball and fired home from six yards.
Michael Hector handled in the area in the 57th minute to give Charlton a penalty and the equaliser.
His protestations to the referee that he was pushed were waved away and Buyens dispatched the spot kick into the roof of the net.
Buyens bagged his second in the 70th minute when he deftly turned in Joe Gomez’s deceiving ball in from right back and put his shot beyond the reach of Adam Federici.
The result was put beyond doubt in the 80th minute by Simon Church who scored in his second successive game. Tony Watt was again the focal point of a Charlton attack and managed to get to the Reading by-line and squared to Church. The Welsh international could not miss and poked in from a few yards.
Pogrebnyak did make the deficit just one goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time when he turned in a cross to give the home side a nervy last minute but they managed to hold out for the three points.
The away side's day was made even worse when Danny Williams was given his marching orders in the 85th minute for a fracas with Tony Watt which saw him receivevhis second yellow card.
There were few talking points in the first half until Pogrebnyak scored the opener as both sides created few chances.
Charlton had the better of the possession but there was little penetration in their attacking movement as Michael Hector and Alex Pearce snuffed out anything that came their way.
The Addicks’ best chance came in the 4th minute when a cleverly worked set piece routine nearly resulted in a goal for Charlton. Eagles played his corner along the ground to the edge of the area and Johann Gudmundsson took a touch before narrowly missing the target.
Roger Johnson was spared the embarrassment of being sent-off thanks to his centre-half partner Alou Diarra. Johnson cynically brought down Jamie Mackie on the edge of the area and had Diarra not been there the home side would have certainly been reduced to 10 men.
Charlton came out firing at the beginning of the second half and had three good chances to score before Hector gifted them the opportunity to equalise by handling in the area.
Tony Watt squandered a golden opportunity four minutes into the half when he could not turn in Morgan Fox’s wonderful cross. The cross missed everyone but Watt at the back post who was five yards out and smashed the ball over the crossbar.
Eagles managed to head over from six yards when unmarked in the 63rd minute. Watt broke away from Pearce on the half way line and drove at the away defence. Watt played in Gudmundson who checked his run and crossed to the unmarked Eagles at the back post who failed to find the target.
The result was nearly put beyond doubt by Church in the 76th minute but he had his shot well blocked by Pearce. Buyens again was in a goalscoring position in the Reading area but chose to square to Church who failed to find the net.
The result sees Charlton stay in 11th place on 54 points and now 20 points above the relegation places.
When Guy Luzon was appointed it was just three which shows what a turn around the manager has achieved.
