Head groundsman Jay Berkhauer has been described as “a top man” by Dartford boss Alan Dowson.

After heavy overnight rain and in the bitter cold and wind, Berkhauer worked extensively to ensure the Darts’ weekend National League South match against frontrunners Yeovil was on – it finished 2-2.

Few games in the county didn’t fall victim to the weather, while many of the ones to get the green light were on artificial surfaces. But Dowson was always confident Berkhauer would ensure their fixture would get the go-ahead.

“Jay is a top man,” he said. “We love Jay.

“When everyone was saying their game was off, I knew this game would be on. It’s not one where you have to ring up the club and ask.

“A lot of clubs had games cancelled but Jay does well. You’ll always get a game on here.

“If it means him staying late at night or coming up early in the morning, that’s the sort of thing that Jay will do.”

On social media after the match, Berkhauer - Dartford’s 2022/23 season clubman-of-the-year - thanked Yeovil for their cooperation with regards to where they warmed up and gave an update on the state of the pitch at Princes Park.

He wrote: “Considering the amount of water that has gone through the pitch today and the amount we took off, I was fearing the worst for the pitch - but it held up really well.

“Big thanks to the @YTFC coaching staff with warm-ups - [it is] very considerate and much appreciated.”

Dartford’s scheduled home league game against Chippenham, on Saturday, January 13, has been postponed after the Bluebirds' 5-3 weekend win against Gloucester City in the FA Trophy. A new date for the fixture will be confirmed in due course.

The Darts have been drawn at home to Isthmian South East Sevenoaks in the Quarter-Finals of the Kent Senior Cup on Tuesday, January 30.
