Out-of-favour Danny Harris has vowed to force his way back into the Dartford team with more displays like the one which changed Saturday’s game against AFC Telford.
Harris, 28, almost left the club on loan last week after quizzing manager Tony Burman over his lack of game time in the Vanarama Conference.
Several clubs did come in for Harris but he decided to take his place on the bench against Telford. It paid off as he helped the Darts come from behind to win 2-1.
Harris said: "I haven’t had many minutes this season. I was a bit frustrated and had a word with Tony in the week.
"I thought I did well in training and he gambled on me, first sub this time. Usually, I’ve been sitting on the bench, not coming on but I did all right when I came on. As soon as I came on, it lifted the team a bit and we got the goals.
"As soon as we got the first goal, you could feel the stadium lift. A goal changes football. I know it’s a cliche but it takes the pressure off the defence, it gives everyone a lift and you could hear the crowd get behind us. They got us over the line."
It was a defiant display by Harris but his manager insisted the forward had nothing to prove to him.
Burman said: "I know what Danny can do. He’s been with me a long time and done brilliantly for this club. But this club have treated him well as well – it’s a two-way thing.
"I don’t think Danny was in the right frame of mind when he’s been left out."
Saturday’s cameo role has certainly pushed Harris’ case for selection.
He said: "That’s what (the manager) probably doesn’t like because he’s got to make a decision! But if I’m on the bench again, so be it. I’ll just have to work hard and force my way back into the team.
"We’ve got a quality squad this year. Tony’s said to me ‘it’s so difficult to pick the team’.
"I’ve been starting in previous seasons and this year, I just didn’t feel I had my chance. I did say to him ‘can I have a word?’ but he’s been good as gold to me. I respect his decisions and have to take it on the chin.
"When he does give me that opportunity, I have to prove myself."
