Several Kent athletics stars have been chosen to represent England at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Sprinter Adam Gemili, from Dartford, is one of three athletes chosen to contest the 100m at Hampden Park.

The World Championship 200m finalist reached the 100m semi-finals at the London Olympics, missing out on a place in the final by just 0.4 seconds.

The 20-year-old came third in the 100m at the Oslo Diamond League meeting last Wednesday, his second straight third-placed finish.

The Blackheath & Bromley ace finished strongly in a time of 10.11secs, but behind Trinidad’s Richard Thompson and France’s Jimmy Vicaut.

His B&B teammate Lorraine Ugen will return from her base in the USA to compete in the long jump at Glasgow, the same event for which she was selected for the World Championships in Moscow last year.

Decathlete Martin Brockman will seek to follow up his bronze at the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010 with another strong performance in Scotland.

The 26-year-old Medway & Maidstone AC man recorded a personal best 7,712pts to claim a place on the podium in India but is yet to repeat that level of performance on the international stage.

Veteran Dartford shot put star Scott Rider from Dartford will be attending his second Games, the 36-year-old having finished sixth in Delhi, while it’s a first call-up for Medway’s Shaunagh Brown.

The 24-year-old will contest the women’s hammer, having set a new PB with a throw of 66.85m on her way to claiming second at the Folksam Grand Prix on Gothenburg, Sweden, on Saturday.

The athletes join the likes of Ashford shooter Sarah Gray and former Whitstable bowler Sian Gordon in the England team.

Canterbury hockey club duo Nikki Lloyd and Nikki Kidd have been named in the Scotland squad for the home games.

The Games get underway on July 23 and run until August 3.
