Welling manager Steve King will not quit after budget cuts

Welling boss Steve King insists he will not walk away from the club – despite having to make significant cutbacks to his playing squad.
The Wings also parted company with two members of King’s backroom staff, coach Osei Sankofa and goalkeeping coach Larry Raji.
But King has stated he will honour his two-year contract at Park View Road.
“There’s no ill feelings at all,” said King. “I signed a two-year contract, I’m expected to honour that and I will honour that.
“Going forward it is going to be tougher, I understand that. I bought into it.
“When you go into jobs and you have a number of injuries at the beginning and the club allows you to sign players to cover those positions, when everyone’s fit you can’t carry the size of squad that we had.
“We’ve had to trim it, we’ve maybe trimmed it in my personal opinion a little bit too much. But we have to live within our means, and I get that 100 per cent.”

King also spoke about his relationship with Welling chairman Mark Goldberg, the pair working together to reduce the club’s outgoings in National League South.
“The relationship I have with Mark is an important one,” added King.
“We’ve both sat down and looked at budgets. We’ve had three or four talks in the space of a week (about) where we needed to get to.
“I thank all the players that have contributed and have moved on because they’ve got us where we are. I thank Osei and Larry who has been with me forever.
“We had no choice in the matter. They are upset but they understand that that’s football, and we have to cut our cloth accordingly.
“If the owner tells you it’s got to be this then that’s what it’s got to be – it’s as simple as that.”
