Michael Day’s dream of playing at the Open Championship came to a premature end at Royal Cinque Ports on Tuesday.

The London Club man joined 71 other players at the east Kent venue hoping to make it through final qualifying and reach the main event at St Andrews.

But things didn’t start well for Day as he carded a disappointing 80 for his first round.

He played just nine holes of his second round before retiring.

The top three players, who all finished five-under-par to qualify, were Gary Boyd and amateurs Alister Balcombe and Benjamin Taylor.
