Welling boss Steve King described referee Tom Bishop as “horrendous” against St Albans on Saturday.

Two Welling players saw red as they held on for a 2-2 draw in National League South.

Bishop was roundly booed by the home fans at the final whistle as the Park View Road crowd voiced their disapproval.

“I’m going to use one word, horrendous,” said King. “He (the referee) was horrendous and that’s all I’m going to say.”

Welling striker Danny Mills faces a three-match ban after collecting a red card for an alleged elbow.

King responded: “Anybody who knows Danny Mills in non-league football would know he’s the least aggressive person you’ll come across - sometimes I want him to be more aggressive!

“He has jumped up to head the ball, levering up, and the guy has headed him. How the referee has seen that as a red card is beyond me – Danny Mills hasn’t got that in him.”

King was also bemused that St Albans captain Tom Bender didn’t see red after an altercation with team-mate Solomon Sambou after Welling went 2-1 ahead.

“I’m fed up with talking about (referees),” said King. “The laughable thing was their two players had a fight on the pitch and he pulled out a yellow card – why are you pulling out a yellow card?

“If you’ve seen it, it’s a red card. If you’ve seen nothing, you give nothing.

“He’s gone to the linesman, (they) have had a fight on the pitch. It was going on (for a while), it’s a red card anywhere on the pitch.

“It’s nothing against St Albans but that’s a red card, it’s not even a questionable decision.”

King stated Welling intend to appeal Mills’ red card but they will be without David Ijaha and Arnaud Mendy through suspension next week.

With Richard Orlu (hamstring) and Jordan Gibbons (hip) both coming off injured, King’s squad is certainly stretched to the maximum.

“I don’t know what to say about that right now,” said the Wings boss. “We’re short on numbers and I’ll have to have a conversation with (chairman) Mark (Goldberg) and the board.

“We can’t run with 11 players next week.”
