Welling boss Mark Goldberg was far from happy despite seeing his team prove too strong for Tonbridge on Monday.

The Wings made it three wins from four home games so far in National League South by posting a 4-2 victory.

But Goldberg felt his side made things harder for themselves, despite the relatively comfortable scoreline.

“I don’t think any of us in our dressing room were happy with our performance in the end which is probably quite a positive thing from the group,” said Goldberg.

“We don’t paper over the cracks. We know it was a good win but not a comfortable win.

“We shouldn’t even be concerned when we have a three-goal advantage. But in the end we were almost hanging on and it shouldn’t be like that.”

The Wings boss added: “I was disappointed with the last 25 minutes as we didn’t control the game.

“We needed that three-goal cushion to know that the game was done and we shouldn’t be like that. We’ve got to learn from it and be better at seeing games out.

“We had the situation at Chelmsford on Saturday where the game was won and we didn’t see it out. We had a draw at Billericay and didn’t see it out so we’ve got a lot to learn.

“I made the substitutions and every player that came on tried to beat three or four players and score themselves instead of passing to a player who was the better option or at least maintain the ball.

“We needed to have control and instead it was like we had six or seven different individuals playing up front.”

The result moved Welling up to 11th in National League South – but Goldberg’s side are just two points off third place.

“Over the last three games we’ve played better so things are improving,” said the Wings boss.

“It was a must-win game again, which is mad (but that’s) how it is.

“If you want to stay in the pack you need to keep winning. It’s important you are moving up (the table).”
