Tony Burman admitted there was room for improvement after Dartford's 2-1 win over Welling.
Goals from Alex Brown and Elliot Bradbrook earned the Darts their third win of the season and lifted them to 12th in National League South.
It was a hard-working display but Burman will be looking for more in the coming weeks.
He said: "The main thing was the three points. At home the onus is on us to take the game to the opposition and in spells we did that.
"I knew the game was going to open up in the second half.
"I thought we started brightly and we had a chance to go one up in the first five minutes.
"I just felt we needed to dictate the game more in the second half. We tried but it’s not a tempo that I want."
Dartford have taken four points from two games since their 4-1 beating at newly-promoted Hampton & Richmond Borough on Bank Holiday Monday.
Burman said: "They all know it was a poor performance. Our levels of play went down on the previous six games. We’d done well with our organisation and the way we’d played and it was a definite blow.
"But you can’t turn back the clock, you have to move on and they’ve moved on in the right manner.
"Maidenhead (on Saturday) was a tough nut to crack and we got a point which was a good start.
"Tonight we’ve come up against a side who got a buzz out of Saturday (Welling won 5-0 at Concord) and they’re not a bad side. They’re not far short of climbing up the table."
Ryan Hayes set up Bradbrook's winner after starting the evening on the bench.
Burman said: "Ryan has been left out and he’s taken it on the chin. He’s taken it in the way I wanted him to.
"He realises that he was a little bit below-par in a couple of games we played over the Bank Holiday weekend but he’s come on and that’s what he can do.
"I was thinking of starting him but in the end I went with Ellis Brown.
"Ryan’s come on and it’s a brilliant cross, an absolutely superb cross.
"Elliot didn’t have a lot of opportunities to get into those areas but he’s one of the guys who’s probably not firing on all cylinders at the moment. That just showed what he can do and he will get better.
"He’s had a bad injury and we’ve had to rest him as much as we can. Hopefully he’s going to get stronger as we go on."
