All the latest from Crayford Greyhound Track

Saturday evening’s card will feature the £500 final for top grade S1 dogs over 540m.

This is the latest in our Owners Bonus Series and we look to have a great final in prospect, despite the surprise elimination of both Jims Journey and Mullrook Celtic last weekend.

The two semis were won by Aero Jimenez and Never Back Down. Both dogs enjoyed a clear run from trap to line to win by three-and-three-quarter lengths and two-and-three-quarter lengths respectively.

I had tipped Never Back Down to several patrons last Saturday as a greyhound in good form.

She is undoubtedly best when leading but based on her recent form, was always going to win if breaking smartly.

She recently recorded 34.01sec here in a grade S2 race, so her time in the semis of 33.97 shows there may well still be more improvement in the final.

This was only her eighth race here since November, so trainer Julie Luckhurst has given the dog plenty of time to adjust after 36 career races at Romford.

Luckhurst made it a winning double when Aero Jimenez came home in 34.14.

Unlike Never Back Down, all of his 36 career races, with the exception of one outing to Sittingbourne, have been here at Crayford and the dog has won 10 times.

Like all of the six finalists, this would be his most prestigious victory.

The dog has competed here recently in five open races, which have much stronger opposition but he did well with a win and three second- place finishes. This, to my mind, should give him the edge given a clear run.

Take note, this is a dog that has had three runs over 714m and fared well, so stamina is no problem. The only doubt is whether this trip of 540 is too short.

The final line up also includes Teresas Babe, Baran Victoria, Juan Dog and Fawkham Heaven. Baran Victoria and Fawkham Heaven will probably start outsiders and I do not think either possess the speed to win.

Teresas Babe is best over longer distances and is yet to win a 540m race here – despite 14 attempts – and although Juan Dog has won plenty over this trip, he is better known as the winner of S2/S3 races. I will side with Aero Jimenez to collect the prize.
