Charlton boss Karl Robinson felt he let the club’s fans down as they marked their return to The Valley on Saturday.

The Addicks celebrated 25 years since they went back to the ground but visitors Portsmouth claimed a 1-0 win in League 1.

“I’m on the floor at the moment, because of the result,” said Robinson. “I feel like I’ve let people down.

“It was a wonderful atmosphere. The beginning of the day was unreal, I won’t experience it again.”

Despite missing key players through injury, Robinson refused to make excuses and admitted his team failed to create enough chances to warrant anything from the game.

“I won’t use injuries as a way out,” he said. “We were excellent in the first 20 minutes but didn't create enough chances in the game.

“We probably lost control of the game for 15 minutes (after Portsmouth scored).

“We had territorial dominance – we were the better team but didn’t create any chances with it.

“You can’t say you were the better team if you don’t have the opportunity to score.”

The only goal of the game came from a free-kick that Robinson felt was harsh on his team, particularly as the assistant referee flagged seconds later to give Charlton a free-kick.

“The referee knows he's got it wrong,” said Robinson. “For their goal, the assistant referee gave a foul to us.

“He felt there was a foul two seconds before. When someone who is five-foot tall goes up against someone who is 6ft 2in, Jay's got to put all his force into that.

“I told the referee we've coached Jay Dasilva to defend like that so maybe if he understood how to coach young players we would've got the free-kick.”
