A gruelling challenge awaits the competitors of the 37th annual Dartford half-marathon on Sunday.

Dartford Harriers AC are the host club for Kent’s longest continuous road run, won last year by Johnny Gilby, and president Tony Durey knows just what the runners are in for.

He has competed across Europe but believes the test in Dartford is the toughest of the lot.

Mr Durey said: “We’re hoping for a good turnout and that it won’t be too hot for the runners.

“It’s a tough course, very hilly. I’ve run half marathons all over Europe and none of them are as hard as Dartford. It’s by far the toughest course I’ve ever run.”

The rural route follows the Darenth Valley south from Dartford and then returning via Green Street Green Road.

In addition to the half-marathon, there will be a Mile Fun Run at 9.15am, open to all. The £3 entry fee will go to Cancer Research UK.
