Charlton manager Alan Pardew is sweating on the fitness of new recruit Mark Hudson ahead of Saturday’s season-opener against Swansea City after the central defender picked up an ankle knock against Athletico Bilbao.

Pardew only has one other specialist centre-half in Jonathan Fortune, with Jose Semedo set to deputise for the suspended Yassin Moutaouakil at right-back.

"Mark has hurt his ankle so we'll be sweating on him a bit,” said the manager.

“But believe me, I'll give him until 1pm on Saturday before I make a decision - that's how important he is to us."

Meanwhile, Nicky Weaver (knee strain), Matt Holland (ankle), Chris Dickson (thigh muscle tear), and Svetoslav Todorov (knee inflammation) are all expected to resume training this week.
