I may only be on loan at Charlton, but the club’s current position is affecting me as much as everyone else.
It’s a good team with good players. Everyone I speak to at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and indeed all over the country, asks me what is going on, and it’s hard to describe.
I’ve played about 10 games now, and it might be hard to believe but I think we could have or should have won every match.
Our opponents have had chances here and there, but we’ve been heavily punished for any mistakes and have not managed to cash in at the other end when we’ve created our own chances.
Sometimes it’s just down to the rub of the green.
I thought we dominated the last home match against Preston North End, but we have struggled to pick up wins, which was why Saturday’s result at Southampton was so pleasing.
We were 3-1 up – although I didn’t think their first goal should have been awarded due to a foul on Nicky Bailey – but then conceded another late on.
I’m sure fans had their hearts in their mouths, and we were certainly on our toes at the end, but fortunately we got the win.
I’m sure some supporters are saying it’s a bit late for such victories now, but we can only see what happens.
Without a doubt we have to win every game from now on – everyone knows that – and then hope other results go our way as well. It’s a tall order, but stranger things have happened in football.
The frustrating thing is that everyone can see there is a good enough squad to stay up.
I can’t speak for what happened before I joined the club, but the atmosphere is good around the squad. They’re a great set of lads and it’s strange how we are down there.
I know some people are already talking about next season, and the club announced its season-ticket prices last week, but we’re still firmly focused on the present.
I believe Charlton could definitely come straight back up if the club was relegated, but let’s wait and see if it actually comes to that at the end of the season.
Southampton have their own problems, of course, and they tried to make it very intimidating for us. But we dealt with it well, and Jonjo Shelvey’s early goal gave us a real boost.
All we can do is move on to the next game now, and after running Wolverhampton Wanderers and Reading close in recent games, hopefully we can do the same against Birmingham City on Saturday before travelling to Coventry City on Easter Monday.
