Considering the season that we’ve had, Sunday night’s player of the year event could have been a very sombre occasion.

No one is happy with the way the team has played this season, least of all the players, and the fans have shown their displeasure a few times.

That said, the support we have received from the terraces has generally been extremely good, and that was again the case at The Valley last weekend.

For my part, I was called up to collect the main player of the year award, which was a huge honour, especially in my first season at the club.

I think I wear my heart on my sleeve, and I think fans appreciate that. I’ve scored a good amount of goals this season, but not everything has gone my way and I like to think that I’ve carried on putting in the effort at all times.

I must thank everyone who voted for me. I’ve won the player of the year award at my last two clubs, Barnet and Southend United, as well, so I know what an honour it is.

Part of being a footballer is having that drive to believe that you will be an integral part of every club that you represent, but when I joined Charlton I wasn’t even sure if I was going to be playing.

That’s what makes getting such an award so significant, and it was good to meet some fans and hear - as if I didn’t know already - what this club means to them.

Relegation is hard to accept, especially if you look at our squad and think about what could have been. As our recent results have shown, we are among the best sides in the division on our day, so our current position is hard to explain.

All that remains for us is go out there and do something about it, and get this club back to where it belongs.

I know there has been a bit of speculation about me in the papers, but there is nothing I can do about that. All I can do is concentrate on playing my best for the club until the end of the season, until that final whistle goes in the last match of the season on Sunday, and then start to think about a promotion campaign next season.
