Dartford assistant manager Roland Edge believes their squad is littered with potential matchwinners.

It was the turn of captain and centre-back Josh Hill set the Darts on their way to a 4-1 Isthmian Premier win over Whitehawk on Saturday with a stunning 35-yard strike.

Goals are coming from all quarters and with Dartford on a 15-match unbeaten league run, it’s easy to see why.

“Every team talks about having a matchwinner,” said Edge. “It’s not normally your centre-half that’s a matchwinner but I do think we’ve got it through the team.

“Samir Carruthers came on having been rested because he’s played a lot of games, he cuts inside in the box and is taken down. Then the penalty was like a walk in the park.

“Olly Box has done the same, Eddie Dsane has done the same, so we’ve got a few people that can chip in and turn a game on its head and that’s always nice.

“Those glimpses of quality need to go with consistency. Your team has to work hard, the team that is seven out of 10 more often will be the team that ends up winning the league.

“Yes, it’s lovely to have someone pop up and turn a game but generally to win something over a whole season, you need that consistency really.

“When everyone was saying this isn’t working, I felt that we played really well in those games and got nothing. We created chances and maybe didn’t put them away or there were some dubious decisions. Do I still think we’re being lucky? Not really, I just think our hard work is paying off.”

The star of the show was clearly man-of-the-match Hill.

It was similar to a long-range strike from fellow defender George Whitefield earlier in the campaign.

“They’ll say they are natural goalscorers,” joked Edge. “Josh has got a classy right foot for a centre-back, he can regularly ping it from one side of the pitch to another so technically when he got there, the minute he caught it we felt the keeper would be in trouble and the ball just kept going and going. It was a fantastic goal.

“As long as it hits the net we don’t mind. He’s approached the ball and assessed what is the right thing to do. He’s come onto it nicely and thought ‘I’ve got the option of floating it back in or having a pop’.

“Sometimes it flies over the stand and you ask what are you doing but it flew into the net and gave us a good start.”

On the 4-1 scoreline, which had some added gloss after two goals in stoppage time for the Darts, Edge added:: “The games have been thick and fast and both teams looked a little big leggy.

“It took a wonder strike to spark it into a game. At 2-0 I felt we were in control but we got sloppy and 2-1 woke us up. We created most of the chances so it was a fair result in the end.

“In any sport, you want that run to continue and it’s about how you deal with it when it doesn’t. It will end at some point, that’s just inevitable. But it’s about how you bounce back from that.

“At the minute we’re on a lovely run, the changing room is full of confidence and long may it continue.”
