Kent Ravens fly the nest

Kent Ravens say a lack of numbers was behind their switch from Dartford to New Ash Green.

The rugby league club are now based at the village’s rugby club after just over a year at Princes Park.

“It was our decision to move,” said chairman Alan Bacon. “A lot of our volunteers have left which made things difficult and as several of our team play union for them, we spoke to NAG chairman Nick Warren about moving there.

“It’s a good venue, with three pitches over a big area, with bar facilities and needs no resources from us.”

The club’s new season in Conference London begins next month, as they look to build on the success of last year, which saw them reach the semi-finals and clinch promotion.

Bacon added: “Attracting funding at the moment is difficult with everything going to the Olympics but we are always looking for new sponsors. “Our players pay their own way during the season, which include trips to places like Southampton, Swindon and Oxford.”

The club have also started a reserves team and an Academy set-up for 16-to-18-year olds. They have already won both their opening games in the London Academy League.
