Dartford boss Tony Burman hailed St Albans goalkeeper Paul Bastock’s performance as the best by an opposing player in his four years in charge after watching his side bow out of the FA Trophy in a penalty shoot-out 4-2 at Princes Park on Tuesday night.
Bastock was the hero with a string of fine saves and Burman said: “I was a little bit despondent after the game, but I couldn’t ask any more of the players or the supporters who were fantastic
“We played very well, created so many chances, and were by far the better side, but Bastock has pulled off double saves on at least three occasions, we hit the bar twice and also had a goal disallowed.
James Quilter put the visitors ahead after 33 minutes, and the Blue Square South side were in front until 12 minutes from the end when Bastock was finally beaten by Rob Haworth’s powerful header.
Substitute Steve Butterworth who replaced Haworth seven minutes from the end of extra-time, put the first spot-kick wide, and then Ryan Hayes saw his effort hit the post, and Burman now wants Darts to reproduce the same performances in their league campaign
Three players, Adam Flanagan (hamstring), Lee Noble (groin) and Danny Dafter are all doubtful for Saturday’s home Ryman League, Premier Division game against Boreham Wood on Saturday.
Welling returned from AFC Totton with a 2-1 success under their belts.
Orlando Smith gave Welling the lead, but Totton equalised in the second half.
Wings keeper Clark Masters saved a Totton penalty, before Tony Sinclair scored with a header to send them through.
Andy Ford's side will play Weymouth at Park View Road in the next round.
