Charlton boss Phil Parkinson dedicated their win at Southampton to the club’s employees who are facing redundancy.
The Addicks revealed last week as many as 25 members of staff could be affected as the club’s two years of parachute payments following relegation from the Premier League in 2007 comes to an end this summer.
Goals from Jonjo Shelvey, Therry Racon and Nicky Bailey at least put a smile on Charlton fans, who watched their first away win in the league since September.
Parkinson said: “We have had a tough week in terms of people getting letters about redundancies.
“We carry the responsibility of all those people back at The Valley and back at the training ground to put in performances and hopefully get wins.”
Shelvey netted his first senior goal in the sixth minute to put Charlton ahead but Dave McGoldrick equalised only for Charlton striker Tresor Kandol to miss a penalty.
However, second-half goals from Racon and Bailey put the Addicks 3-1 ahead before Bradley Wright-Phillips pulled one back for the home side late on.
Parkinson and Southampton boss Mark Wotte were both sent to the stands late on after a touchline spat.
“For 70 minutes we probably put in our best away performance of the season,” added Parkinson. “In the last 20 minutes we sat deep and invited pressure and looked like a team that had not been two goals ahead in many games.”
