Kent youngsters could land a plum trip to a Football League club in the FA Youth Cup this week.
Victory in the FA Youth Cup third qualifying round will see them in the first round draw alongside league clubs including Gillingham and Charlton.
Among them are Phoenix Sports, who are effectively a school team given their link-up with Erith School.
Phoenix have already knocked out Dartford, Ebbsfleet and VCD to get to this stage, and host Whitehawk on Wednesday evening.
Academy manager Jack Parkinson, who also plays for National League South Welling, said: “It’s been great little run for the club so far and boys are loving it.
“For us as a school team to be in this competition is brilliant. The results against the likes of Dartford and Ebbsfleet are a testament to how hard the boys have worked so far.
“To now see some of them playing in the first team now at Phoenix is brilliant and shows there’s a progression and the club are willing to use them if they are good enough.”
Head teacher Mrs Allen and Head of School Mr Bryce have attended the Youth Cup matches, underlining the support the team gets from the staff.
“The school have been brilliant and have supported the academy as much as possible,” added Parkinson.
“It shows how passionate the staff are, both in and out of their working hours.”
As for the small matter of facing Whitehawk knowing victory could put the school’s team against Football League academy players, Parkinson added: “They are a very good side and are current treble winners so we have a really tough game ahead on Wednesday.
“But it’s one we can’t wait for and the boys will work their hardest to win. Whatever happens it has been a fantastic effort from everybody so far.”
Welling are already through after their game against Dover went to penalties on Monday night at Park View Road. Other ties involving Kent sides see Margate host Staines on Wednesday and Bromley travel to Hastings.
There is an open night at Erith School on Tuesday, November 7 from 6pm for those leaving year 11 next summer who are looking for a career in football alongside taking their A-levels. Further details can be obtained by contacting footballacademy@erith.kent.sch.uk
