Dartford v Maidstone United

DARTFORD entertain Kent rivals Maidstone United in Ryman League Division 1 South tonight. It is the first time in 15 years the two sides have met.

Stones joint manager Alan Walker is predicting a "treat" for supporters. The two sides were fierce rivals even before the events of 1992, when Maidstone shared Dartford’s Watling Street ground.

That was sold to a property developer and both clubs subsequently went bust.

But Walker believes both sides have moved on. He said: "There’s a long history between the two sides, but that all happened a long time ago, but there are two completely different regimes now.

"It’s great to see two clubs who almost went out of existence with good teams, going back to new stadiums. The game is going to be a treat for the fans."

Darts boss Tony Burman is also relishing the clash. He was a prolific goalscorer for Dartford as a player and said Maidstone tried to sign him several times.

He said: "The game will bring back many happy memories. We haven’t played them in a long time and I’m looking forward to it."

The game was originally scheduled to be the first at Dartford’s new ground at Princes Park, but ongoing construction problems mean the game will now be held at Thurrock.
