Charlton boss Karl Robinson was left furious with his players after they failed to stick to their game plan.

The Addicks were a distant second against title-chasing Shrewsbury at The Valley on Saturday - and Robinson knew exactly why.

"We didn’t stick to a game plan," he stated. "Every single player lost their one-v-one duels.

“The game plan was to be more aggressive than normal and play forwards, get behind them because they are a high-pressing team.

"We didn’t ask the players to play sideways and backwards. We warned them no sideways or backwards, all it would do is encourage their press.

“For some reason they thought they were better than they were. We were nowhere near good enough. They thought talent would over-ride their energy and honesty levels."

Shrewsbury even had the luxury of missing a first-half penalty and Robinson admitted his side deserved to be booed off at the full-time whistle.

"We take the plaudits when we win and we have to take the criticism that's going to come our way when we lose," said Robinson.

"If you look at 80 per cent of the football, we were second best.

"We 100 per cent deserved (to be booed off)."

Robinson was also baffled that his side picked up two yellow cards from a melee towards the final whistle - when Shrewsbury went unpunished for their part in the incident.

"The referee lost control in the second half but that's no excuse, we were rubbish," he said.

“There were four of their players around Kashi and not one of their players gets anything out of the melee.”
