A PUPIL from a Kent grammar school has been selected for an international fencing competition.
Alek Makucewz, 14, who attends Dartford Grammar School, will travel to Paris as part of England Fencing’s 'Tomorrow’s Achievers' team to attend the competition which features some of the world’s best young fencers.
Alek, who started fencing when he was seven, has already won several medals in domestic competitions.
These include a gold medal at the British Youth Championships and a joint first in the Leon Paul Junior Series. He was one of just 12 male fencers picked for the 24-strong squad.
The Paris competition is attended by hundreds of fencers, representing more than 20 countries, and takes place on February 3.
Ray Stafford, spokesman for England Fencing, Tomorrow’s Achievers, said "We have been watching Alek’s progress and there is no doubt he shows great potential."
Alek’s ambition is to fence in the Olympics and World Championships. He trains regularly at Aldershot fencing club.
