The feature race on Saturday’s card is the £500 final of the Betdaq 1st UK Race Commission-Free Everyday Stakes over 540m.

This open race event started last weekend, with 18 starters in three heats and the first two in each made the final.

Crayford have two representatives in the final and both won their heats in times that strongly suggest they have every chance of a home victory.

Precious Lucy won the first heat for top owner Chris Sliney and trainer Gemma Davidson, and goes into the final in a rich vein of form since her first appearance here in mid-September.

She has now won three of five starts over this distance. Having won an open race at Drumbo Park, in Ireland, she had 10 races at Brighton before her recent ones here.

She had to win her heat the hard way, having trapped out in fifth and incurred crowding, before moving into second place where she remained until literally the last stride. She got home by a short head in 33.99sec – her best to date.

In contrast, Fernhill Fury, trained here by Paul Tompsett, put in one of his trap-to-line performances in heat three in 33.88 and never looked like being caught after a sectional 12.72 over the first 160m.

He is a serious dog around this track having won nine top-grade S1 races and four open over this distance and his time, if repeated, would see him win on Saturday.

While we have a good final in prospect, it will be interesting to see the Crayford pair head-to-head – there may not be much between them.

So, what chance the opposition?

Airforce Power, representing Wimbledon trainer Ricky Holloway, won heat two in 33.92 at odds of 7-2.

His chances will rest on whether he can match Fernhill Fury over the first 160m as he now has to find two-and-a-half lengths in running at that point on the times from the heats. If Fury gets a flyer, I cannot see Airforce Power catching him.

The line-up is completed by Airforce General and Westmead Rocky – giving Holloway three finalists – and Brinkleys Ace trained by Gordon West.

The prices of these three last Saturday, 7-1, 8-1 and 10-1 respectively, shows all three seem to have an uphill task. I’m going with Fernhill Fury.
