It is one of those facts that race goers often back dogs purely because of a name. So we can assume that newcomer to the track Fatty Arbuckle will be one of those greyhounds that attracts support.
Plenty of punters will therefore have gone home happy after Saturday night’s meeting when the dog romped home by five lengths to win a top grade S1 race over 540m.
This was just the second race here for the greyhound trained by Katie O’Flaherty and he looks like becoming a real force to be reckoned with after recording a win time of 33.77secs in a trap-to-line winning performance.
The dog had previously won eight of his 26 races at Henlow, where Katie trained before joining Crayford recently, so her greyhound knows what it takes to win and his two races here to date strongly suggest that both the track and distances here suite him well.
Name backers may have landed a double on the night as I am sure that the amusingly named Drop The Towel will also have had his supporters having won his debut race over 380m for trainer Julie Luckhurst at decent odds of 6/1.
The manner of the win was eye-catching as the dog missed his break when the traps opened coming out in last place, he then ran wide at the first bend but by halfway down the back straight he took up the lead and looked strong in running, crossing the line a length and three quarters in front.
Any greyhound that can put in a last-to-first performance here over 380m is well worthy of note and despite an upgrading, he could well win again next time.
