There are not many occasions here at Crayford when a greyhound can improve from last to win – particularly over our four-bend 380m distance.
While you must take into account the trouble the dog’s opponents may have had, sometimes it has been a cleanly-run race and the dog has simply been too good.
These dogs are worthy of note, so here are my dogs for you to watch out for next time they race having come through the field to win in their last outing.
Rising Bullet won an A4 race here a week ago in a decent 23.92sec, having completely missed his break away from the starting traps.
But, from trap one, the dog made the most of being on the inside of his opponents at the first bend to improve his position to third out of the second bend.
With plenty of work still to do, he managed to pace down the back straight to take up the lead in the home straight and win by a length.
This win time is about as fast as the dog runs but with this victory and a second place in his previous outing, he is in good form. As a previous winner in grade A3, which he will face next time, he could well win again.
You would imagine that over the longer distance of 540m, it would be easier to come from last to first place but yet again this is not often seen.
So a mention must be given to Crackaway Caesar and Rock N Rye, who both bucked the trend during the last week to get up and win from being in last place
early on.
Crackaway Caesar won in grade S5 having been crowded at the first bend but showed real determination to romp home by just under two lengths in 34.73.
The dog gets the distance well, having run and won here over 714m before, so he will always be finishing strongly over 540m.
He has been racing here since August 2013 but his next race should be in grade S4 and this will be his first at that level, so I would wait for the dog to drop back to grade S5 before backing.
Rock N Rye has been in excellent form with five wins and three seconds in her last 12 races. Her latest victory in grade S5 strongly suggests that a win at S4 level is well within her range. She is an improving type and you can expect more wins from her.
