Any greyhound that has won four of its last six races here is worthy of a mention, especially when the opposition is top class.
So I would like to draw your attention to Twilight Des, trained by Julie Luckhurst, who has been impressive over the last seven weeks recording wins once in grade A2, twice in top grade A1 and also an open race win – all over 380m.
As I have stated, the pecking order in the top grade always seems to be changing which is good for the track and punters. But at the moment, he is the one they all seem to have to beat.
Last Saturday, the January 2013 son of Vans Escalade put no less than six-and-a-half lengths between himself and the rest of the field across the winning line in a blisteringly fast 23.16sec.
He ran against the best we have, including Nippy Belle and Stepit Up Louie. However, take note that the local bookmakers sent Des off as the 2/1 race favourite, so they share my view he is at the top.
He may well remain at relatively short prices against graded company but you can expect better value in forthcoming open races in which he is sure to figure.
It is always good for a track when one of our contracted trainers has a major race win and that was the case last Saturday on Greyhound Derby final night at Wimbledon stadium.
Crayford trainer Steve Gammon was successful with Jetstream Reason, who won the William Hill Champion Hurdle live on Sky Sports.
When you take into account that he beat the winner of the last two Irish Grand Nationals, this performance says he is now capable of competing against – and beating – the top hurdlers and he looks set to go on and win more big races.
He made the most of his trap one draw on the inside and, although he was unable to lead early on, showed good pace to the first bend to take over control going into the third turn. He is certainly flying the flag for Crayford Stadium.
While Jetstream Reason is an established star, all dogs have to start somewhere and you can’t do any better than win your debut race. So well done to Derrew Pixie on winning her first career race here in bottom grade A8 over 380m by just a head.
It will be a long way to go for her to reach the top but you just never know.
