Welling 0 Charlton 1
Striker Luke Varney scored the only goal of the game as Charlton picked up their first victory of pre-season at Park View Road on Wednesday night.
A crowd of just over 2,000 braved the heavy rain to watch an entertaining contest which was settled when Varney tapped in from close range after Stuart Fleetwood's unselfish 25th-minute lay-off.
Charlton, who fielded a much stronger starting line-up than the previous night at Bromley, had the majority of possession but failed to add to their advantage with Lloyd Sam going closest before the break.
Teenage substitute Jonjo Shelvey shot wide with 18 minutes left before Fleetwood missed two golden opportunities.
Twice sent clear, he was denied by Welling substitute keeper Scott Andrews and then dragged the second effort wide of the far post.
Welling fielded Charlie Sheringham, who was watched from the sidelines by father Teddy, along with trialists Michael Jordan, Graeme Andrews, Michael Power and Tom Kemp.
The Wings also thanked the fans who braved the wet weather by offering ticket stub holders free admission to a Welling home game this season.
