Tony Watt inspired a rejuvenated Charlton side to their third win in four games to deny Chris Powell a dream return to the Valley on Saturday afternoon, writes Josh Fordham.
A second half brace from Watt came after Johann Gudmundsson opener was enough to seal a demolition of Huddersfield in front of over 25,000 fans on the club's annual Football for a Fiver match.
The former player and manager for the Addicks could not inspire his Huddersfield side to victory on his first game back at the club since being sacked in February 2014.
Watt can take many of the plaudits for resurrecting this Charlton side that were sinking toward relegation just four matches ago. His run of good performances has coincided with the team's return to form.
Johann Gudmundsson fired the Addicks into the lead in the 34th minute with his seventh league goal of the season.
Watt earned a free kick when Huddersfield right back David Edgar, struggling to cope with his pace, cynically brought him down. The resulting free kick from 30 yards was whipped into the top right corner past the full stretched Alex Smithies.
Watt was central to all Charlton attacks and put them 2-0 up shortly after the half-time break.
Igor Vetokele used his pace to break away from Mark Hudson in the Huddersfield defence and squared it to Watt. The Scottish striker had to check his run and adjust his feet but this did not stop him slotting the ball past Alex Smithies to double the home side's advantage.
The January signing capped off his performance in the 72nd minute when he added his second and put the result beyond doubt. A mazy run that caused havoc amongst the Huddersfield defence was finished with a sublime drilled shot into the back of the net.
Addicks top scorer Igor Vetokele had an off day upfront alongside Watt. The Angolan striker had three good chances but squandered them all.
The best of those chances came in the 24th minute when Tony Watt did well to beat David Edgar at right back and get into the box. He squared it to Vetokele who had the chance to hit it first time but took a touch and gave the Huddersfield defenders time to recover. His shot was weak and straight to Smithies who gathered with ease.
Chances for the away side were few and far between but when they did get within shooting range they failed to test Stephen Henderson.
Ishmael Miller had the best of those chances five minutes after the Charlton goal. A low cross from Jack Robinson was picked up by Miller but he screwed his shot well wide of the right post.
The second half put the result beyond doubt for the Addicks and they could have easily have scored six or seven.
Watt again nearly created another in the 57th minute. He skinned Edgar yet again and spotted the run of Vetokele but the ball in behind the Huddersfield was just beyond the toe of Vetokele.
Chances to Wilson, Buyens and Watt were not converted from set pieces before Watt did finally add the third.
Henderson maintained the home side's clean sheet when he pulled off a world class save to deny Murray Wallace in the 70th minute in what was a dismal showing from the away side.
The growing confidence in the Addicks was epitomised by Chris Eagles’ attempted lob of Smithies in injury time. From 25 yards Eagles spotted Smithies off his line but the Terriers goalkeeper managed to push it onto the bar.
The three points takes Charlton to 12th in the table level on points with Huddersfield but above them on goal difference.
