Welling manager Andy Ford has completed the signing of midfielder Ross Lover from Cray Wanderers on a one-year deal.
Ford fought off competiton from Blue Square South rivals AFC Wimbledon for Lover's signature and the player put pen to paper before featuring for 45 minutes of the 1-0 friendly defeat to Charlton on Wednesday night.
Ford said: "If I had left it any longer I think we might have lost him.
"He was on trial for AFC Wimbledon and I know they were keen on him.
"He is local which is important, is good at set pieces and is more attacking than defensive."
Ford is also running the rule over a number of other trialists and disclosed that two more signings could be added within the next 48 hours.
He said: "I'm speaking to a player on Thursday and will get a decision from another one by Friday.
"They both played full-time football last season and I'll be delighted if I can get one or both on board."
Meanwhile Ford will have another look at the trialists from the Charlton game next week.
They include keepers Scott Andrews (Bearsted) and Michael Jordan (Lewes), defenders Graeme Andrews (Bearsted), Matt McEntegart (Forest Green), Tom Kemp (Leyton Orient), midfielders Seb Schoburgh (Dulwich), Liam Wright (Sutton) and strikers Sol Pinnock (Fisher) and Dayo Ositola (Woking).
Forward Michael Power, previously of Cray Wanderers and Thamesmead, is also on trial at AFC Wimbledon and is due to play for them this weekend.
