Welling's faint hopes of avoiding relegation from the National League came to an abrupt end on Saturday.

Back-to-back wins suggested signs of a late recovery for Dean Frost's side, who needed to win all four of their remaining games to have any chance of staying up.

But they fell at the first hurdle against bottom side Kidderminster, who left Park View Road with three points thanks to two late goals.

It was a performance that summed up Welling's season. Some promise but too sloppy too often in too many areas.

The Wings started well and Ade Yusuff had a shot blocked inside 35 seconds. Elton Ngwatala then fired wide of the target for Kidderminster and Welling's Kadell Daniel dragged an effort wide inside the first five minutes.

Welling took a seventh-minute lead when Ian Gayle's deep cross was kept alive by Reece Harris and the ball eventually fell for Daniel, who turned and fired home from close range.

Kevin Lokko headed over a dangerous Harris corner as Wings pushed for a second but they started to sit back and invite the visitors into the contest.

Before half-time Ben Whitfield and James McQuilkin both went close and Welling reached the break aware that they needed to improve in the second half.

However, that improvement never came and it was a sign of how poor Kidderminster were that they had not equalised sooner.

They levelled matters with eight minutes left when keeper Marek Rodak was unable to hold a long-range shot and Kelvin Langmead scored from close range.

That goal was followed by a second three minutes later as Kidderminster broke down the right and McQuilkin tapped home inside the six-yard box.

Welling had nothing left and their final three games in the National League will now have count for little ahead of a summer of rebuilding.
