Wings boss handed keeper boost

Welling keeper Jamie Turner could be fit for the start of the season
Welling keeper Jamie Turner could be fit for the start of the season

Keeper Jamie Turner is winning his battle to be fit for Welling's Blue Square South opener at Bath on August 9.

Turner underwent a scan at the end of last week on a possible hernia injury - having already undergone an operation during the summer - but the news is good.

Welling boss Andy Ford said: "All that the scan showed up is mild, so that's good news.

"Jamie can kick do everything but kick a ball, he has been training so is fit in that sense.

However, Ford did warn that Turner is not guaranteed to start at Bath even if he does declare himself fit - with trialist Scott Andrews being given the chance to impress during pre-season.

The Wings boss said: "With a bit of luck, he could be fit for the start of the season but whether he starts is another matter."

Utility man Ryan Johnson has signed for the Wings after impressing in pre-season. Johnson, who scored at Erith Town on Monday night, played 45 minutes at AFC Hornchurch to impress Ford the following night.

Ford felt the manner of his side's defeat at Hornchurch - they lost 2-1 in a physical battle - shows that there is still some work to be done.

"It was good in a way because it shows that we are still a new team," he said. "Hornchurch played about eight of the team that were in a promotion push together last season and it showed.

"For example, our left-back didn't know what the left-sided centre-back was doing and so on, but that's what pre-season is for.

"I'm not going to get too disappointed by the result because we are still getting to know each other.

"It had to be a rebuild job in the summer otherwise we'd be struggling again this season. I've made brave decisions to clear out the old and bring in new players."
