The dog which fell 200 feet down a cliff near Dover last week has been put to sleep.

The nine-year-old retriever, called Barley, was walking with its owners along the clifftop near Aycliffe, above Samphire Hoe, on Sunday, October 6, when it fell over the edge.

Coastguard officers were alerted and rescue teams from Deal, Langdon and Folkestone attended. The dog fell two-thirds of the way down the cliff.

Coastguard Gareth Rice was lowered to reach the frightened and injured dog, with his colleagues securing the ropes and managing his descent.

The dog was taken to the Burnham House veterinary surgery in Castle Street, Dover, for examination and treatment but had to be put down.
