Residents of 50 flats were evacuated from their homes in the early hours of this morning following a fire in a third-floor apartment.

Fire crews were called to Royal Victoria Place - in the former Royal Victoria Hospital building - in Dover High Street at 12.30am.

At the height of the blaze 20 fire-fighters were involved in the operation to put out the flames. Crews from Whitfield, St Margaret's Canterbury and Thanet joined Dover crews at the scene.

The top-floor flat where the fire started was completely destroyed.

No-one was injured and the British Red Cross were called in to help look after those who had to leave their homes. All the residents have now been allowed to return.

The cause of the fire is being probed by police and fire investigators.
