A district councillor is facing a storm of controversy over allegedly racist comments - after he referred to "sons of camel drivers" on Twitter.

Deal town and district councillor Bob Frost also made a reference to "frogs" on the social media website.

It is the latest in a string of race controversies Cllr Frost has faced.

He has previously been criticised for referring to 'ragheads' on Facebook, while during the London riots in 2011 he was suspended from the Conservative party for using the term 'jungle bunny.'

The 'jungle bunny' row led to him leaving his job as a part-time maths teacher at Sir Roger Manwood’s School in Sandwich, although he was later cleared of wrong-doing by the standards committee in 2012.

The latest incident was sparked by Twitter comments made on March 28 when Cllr Frost responded to a post by MP Charlie Elphicke referring to a possible change in management of the Port of Dover.

Cllr Frost tweeted: "Simple. Status quo = bad. Sale to frogs/sons of camel drivers = bad. Mutual ownership = good."

Other social media users were quick to criticise Cllr Frost's comments.

Steve Burnham, from Deal, questioned 'whether a man who casually uses race-based slurs is fit to hold public office.'

Tory MP Mr Elphicke said that while he had not seen the 'camel drivers' tweet, it was "not a term I would use and is not appropriate."

But Cllr Frost defended the comments, accusing the local Labour party of creating 'faux outrage.'

He added: "God knows what it would do to their blood pressure if they read those of the Duke of Edinburgh, Boris Johnson or Jeremy Clarkson.

"Perhaps their ‘anger’ might be better directed against the four Labour councillors who were found to have bullied town hall staff and cost hard-working council taxpayers an alleged £47,000. Now that really is offensive.

“They really should realise that Orwell’s 1984 was a novel and that Newspeak, the controlled language created by the totalitarian state, has not yet passed into UK law."

Cllr Frost's reference to 'ragheads' came three years ago in a post on Facebook after he had been on a Lynx helicopter.

He said that during the flight he was "swooping down on golfers pretending they were ragheads, and firing at us."

At the time he explained his controversial comments by posting a photograph apparently showing what appear to be Afghans with head coverings.

Referring to the previous controversy, MP Mr Elphicke said: "We take responsibility and took action at the time.

“He said he didn’t mean it, he apologised, he lost his job over it and he was severely disciplined by the Conservative group.

“I think the Labour Party is trying to victimise Cllr Frost.”

But university student and Labour party member Cheska Rees, 20, from Kingsdown, referring to the 'raghead' comment, said: "Everyone can make mistakes but when he carried on defending it and showed a picture of people in head scarves I don’t think it was appropriate, or to carry on defending it once you know what it does mean.

"He should have apologised if he didn’t mean it like that."
