Matt Mackay was one of many runners from Deal who completed a 26.2 mile mission on Sunday.

However Matt had the extra challenge of running the London Marathon with cracked and bruised ribs.

Matt said: “I recently cracked my ribs playing rugby for Deal and Betteshanger 2nd team, so it’s going to be a challenge.”

“It’s typical me, it’s the kind of thing I do.”

Matt, 29, who is a Royal Engineer in the British Army and his sister Alison Mackay, 28, a veterinary nurse in Deal, took part in aid of cystic fibrosis.

Matt said: “We have two cousins who have got cystic fibrosis, one was diagnosed at birth and one a couple of years after. They’re 19 and 17 now.”

Matt was unsuccessful in getting a ballot place, but was put on the reserve list to run for his charity.

He was called only two months ago to hear the news he had a place, but for five weeks of that time he has been unable to train.

Matt posted on Facebook: "I never dreamt we would reach £2,000, but to now have hit over £2500 has made every yard of pain worth it.

"Thank you so so much, I can't tell you what this means to me and Alison."

London’s marathon is the largest annual fundraising event in the world.

This year, a record 170,150 people applied to run, only 50,200 were accepted.
