A man from Dover is starting a six-year jail sentence for dealing drugs.

Christopher Newman, 50, of Salisbury Road, was arrested by police in February during an operation to target the supply and use of illegal drugs in the Dover district.

He was found in possession of a large quantity of crack cocaine and heroin.

He was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court on Tuesday July 7 to six years imprisonment.

Newman is one of 23 people arrested in the Dover district as part of an initiative to target drugs organised by the Dover District Community Safety Unit.

During the four-month operation at the beginning of 2009, 17 search warrants were executed resulting in 12 charges for offences including possession with intent to supply drugs and handling stolen goods.

A number of people have been convicted at court and have received either custodial or community sentences. A total of 350 hours of unpaid community work has been passed as a sentence for two offenders.
