Border Force officers based in Dover have foiled two suspected smuggling attempts at the port in one day.

In the first incident officers intercepted a Czech-registered lorry and found approximately 36 kilos of heroin, 24 kilos of amphetamine and five kilos of cannabis in the spare wheel. The drugs had an estimated street value of £2 million.

The 41-year old Czech driver was charged with the importation, appeared before Dover Magistrates and pleaded not guilty. He was remanded in custody.

The second seizure involved one-and-a-half kilos of heroin which officers found in a British-registered car.

Both the driver of the car, a 39-year-old man from London, and the passenger, a 29 year-old man also from London, have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Investigations into both cases are ongoing.

Carole Upshall from Border Force said: "Border Force officers are on constant alert to keep illegal drugs and other banned substances out of the UK.

"Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to drug smuggling should call the hotline on 0800 59 5000."
