Those feeling lonely or in general need of a listening ear can now access conversation at a designated spot.

The ‘Happy To Chat Bench’ has been installed at Sandown Castle Community Garden in Deal.

It was the idea of Linda Ford, founder of the gardens, who learnt about the concept online.

Using a community grant from Dover District Council, the new space has been created.

She told KentOnline: "The idea of the bench is to identify those who would like someone to chat to.

"We often have visits from people who are looking for someone to talk to.

"They may feel lonely or just want to meet other people and make friends and we thought this bench was a great idea as well as creating extra seating for those visiting."

The volunteer-run community garden situated in Sandown Road was founded by Mrs Ford and her husband John in 2015.

It was during a walk that they thought something could be done to beautify the ruin - which is one of three defence forts built on the coast at Deal during Henry VIII's reign.

Bursting with colour, it now features blooms, creepers and succulents and a wild flower garden to attract bees and butterflies.

It is a collaborative effort involving up to 20 volunteers and is run on donations only.

The garden has won national and regional acclaim with gold awards in the Our Community category in the South and South East in bloom regional competition.

It was also the winner in the southern region of Cultivation Street.

Last June, it featured on BBC2's Gardeners World (episode 14) which is still avaialble to view on iplayer.

Mrs Ford added: "There’s nothing nicer than sitting in a garden with a cup of tea and talking to others, especially as we’ve all had a difficult couple of years.

"We are sure this bench will be very much appreciated by the community."

Sandown Community Garden is free and accessible 24 hours a day.

There is free roadside parking and wheelchair access. Dogs on leads only.
